ALY YTTERBERG
Aly Ytterberg is the artist behind Ytterberg Studio. She is a hard-edge, color block painter who lives in St. Louis. She earned a degree in Sculpture (from WashU here in St. Louis), but her current work focuses on abstracted and minimalist landscape and nature paintings. Her work breaks down images of nature into their simpler forms and colors in order to help people see the world around them in a new light.
Ytterberg starts by taking a landscape photograph from a trip or hike or other excursion. She then pulls out the colors and basic shapes from the photograph to create an abstracted version of the landscape. Her paintings require a lot of tape, numerous layers of paint, and a methodical working practice. Ytterberg’s favorite part of the art-making process is getting to stand back and see the finished landscape coming through in the simple shapes and forms. She has exhibited her work at the St. Louis Artists Guild, Houska Gallery, Duane Reed Gallery, and Intersect Arts Center.
